Mission : eGY-Africa: cyber-infrastructure
for science in Africa
Regional/National Education and Research
Networks
MAREN, the Malawi NREN, is one
of the founding members of the UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and
Education Networking. MAREN has two founder members: the University of
Malawi and Mzuzu University. Two other institutions are in the process
of joining: National College of Information Technology (NACIT), a
tertiary institution; and the Department of Agricultural Research, a
research institution. These institutions are on several locations from
north to south of Malawi. Two new universities are likely to join
within the year. Currently, MAREN falls within the framework of MALICO,
the Malawi Library and Information Consortium.
UBUNTUNET ALLIANCE FOR
RESEARCH AND EDUCATION NETWORKING
UbuntuNet Alliance has been established to capitalise on the emergence
of optical fibre and other terrestrial infrastructure opportunities and
thus become the Research and Education Network (REN) backbone of
Africa! Tertiary education and research institutions
throughout the rest of the world are connected to the Internet
using fast low-cost fibre. This gives them a huge
research and learning bonus. Until now, most of Africa has been
missing from this connected world. However, this is changing
with the emergence of UbuntuNet Alliance which enjoys
close linkages with the Association of African Universities
and the regional higher education bodies.
Mozambique Research and
Education Network
The Mozambique Research and Education Network – MoRENet, is the planned
nationwide data network that will interconnect Academic and Research
institutions, developing activities with non-profit purposes. The
network, which is intended to be a framework for fast and efficient
exchange of research data among its members, has as main philosophy to
take advantage and make use of the already deployed fiber
infrastructure in the country. The long term goal of MoRENet is to
instigate the growth of the infrastructure and stimulate research
projects in the country.
Tertiary Education
Network (TENET)
TENET was founded in August 2000 jointly by the then Committee of
Technikon and Sout African Universities.
RENU or the Research and Education
Network for Uganda is an umbrella organisation bringing together
Universities and Research Organisations in Uganda. We are motived by
the benefits and synergies that will arise out of working together to
generate a human resource that will lift Uganda out of
under-development; and conduct research and outreach activities that
support national development initiatives.
